Onti Kombu | Bandipur
This is probably one of the most popular tuskers at Bandipur. He is known as "Onti Kombu" which means single tusk in Kannada. He is believed to have killed about 30 people so far on the Mysore-Ooty highway (2 people in March this yr). This is largely due to the fault of the tourists themselves who get off their vehicle and try to get a closeup pic or do something equally foolish. He supposedly has a short fuse and would charge whenever he feels like. But I didnt find this to be completely true. He seemed to be relatively calm during most of the times that we saw him. Most people at Bandipur call him Highway security for obvious reasons.

That's quite a close-up shot you have got! I've spotted in him twice on the main Ooty road recently. Awesome image!

Will never forget this fellow! Saw him first thing in the morning when I opened the doors of the bungalow I was staying in couple of months ago, and almost approached him mistaking him for a camp elephant! Though he was in 'musth', he seemed quite docile. I think barring a few instances, he has charged and killed only pesky tourists... because the way the tourists in the complex were acting that morning (some wanted him to charge so that it would be 'fun'), I was anticipating a bloody start to the day.

Thanks for sharing this lovely image Chirdeep!

Have seen this chap almost every time I have visited Bandipur and he has always seemed to be calm and has never given any inkling of his alleged short temper .... If he has actually killed people, then they must have provoked him by their inherent stupidity, commonly found in "tourists"...

There are two ontikoumbus in Bandipur.
The other guy is right tusked.
Onceupon a time he was a notorious guy now he has become docile.
The right tusked guy is known to have killed in recent times?

It is surprising how "tourists" think elephants are domesticated entertainers whose sole purpose in life is to entertain people. Reading Aditya's note, I cant believe anyone can be as stupid as to taunt an elephant for fun!
