He is known as "Onti Kombu" which means single tusk in Kannada. He is believed to have killed about 30 people so far on the Mysore-Ooty highway (2 people in March this yr). This is largely due to the fault of the tourists themselves who get off their vehicle and try to get a closeup pic or do something equally foolish. He supposedly has a short fuse and would charge whenever he feels like. But I didnt find this to be completely true. He seemed to be relatively calm during most of the times that we saw him. Most people at Bandipur call him Highway security for obvious reasons. Saw him first thing in the morning when I opened the doors of the bungalow I was staying in couple of months ago, and almost approached him mistaking him for a camp elephant! Though he was in 'musth', he seemed quite docile. I think barring a few instances, he has charged and killed only pesky tourists... because the way the tourists in the complex were acting that morning (some wanted him to charge so that it would be 'fun'), I was anticipating a bloody start to the day.
